Desperation makes us do crazy things, and most of the time, no one sees it coming. Its growth is gradual and relatively irreversible if the status quo remains the status quo.
The French Revolution didn’t just happen; rather, it built up over time. Similarly, the American Revolution wasn’t a by-the-way-I’m-bored-let’s-go-make-war situation. In fact, revolutions are the outlets of pent up expressions fuelled by desperation.
An athlete doesn’t just wake up one day and be like “Oh, I need to cheat”. The same can be said of a national-examination candidate sitting for exams that could define their future lives. In all these scenarios, there’s a certain pressure that leads to an eventual outburst.
Think of water: on its own, it’s great, calm…inviting even. No wonder Moana couldn’t resist going out to sea (haha). Anyway, trap the water in a sufuria then put it over a fire. The situation makes the water agitated, and it begins to show. Over time, the water can’t take it anymore and it boils over. This thing that has been said to be life is now deadly.
Looking at Kenya’s situation at the moment, things are heating up…and it would seem that those in power couldn’t care any less. I mean, we are still borrowing money to construct roads that we do not yet need all just to leave behind a legacy. Let’s not forget the ever-increasing prices of fuel. What one could fill 2 litres in their car with once upon a time is almost barely enough to fill 1 litre.
It’s true that we could blame it on the on-going Russia-Ukraine conflict…but a more critical thinker would blame us instead for getting too comfortable and not taking measures to cushion ourselves from such a crisis. I mean, if we actually sought ways to manufacture our coffee instead of buying back the finished product, for example, wouldn’t the profit benefit the whole nation (plus put more money in pockets)?
There are already traces of leaking outlets. People are turning to crime to help get some cash into their wallets. With the increasing prices of commodities and stagnant salaries, how could we expect any less? It would have made sense if both increased, because then the balance would be maintained.
Honestly, I am afraid. I am afraid for my country, and I am afraid for my life. If the status quo were to remain the status quo, well, it’s not looking good.
Relating the article to sports, cheating is not the only outlet option……I would know. Ever heard of burnout? A common sign is when an athlete stops practising their sport or even wanting anything to do with it. And many times, it could have been avoided had it been detected earlier.
