DBA’S CYCLING GC LEADERBOARD PROBABILITY: YOUR FIGHTING CHANCE

The racing season is back, and I’m super excited! With COVID, life is unpredictable with one still holding their breath waiting for lockdown III. In the meantime, however, we’ll make the most of the now and resume our competitive season, yaaay! Fun and games here we come!

Now, before Lockdown II, we managed to host Sprint Battle #1 at the Two Rivers Mall and these are the numbers:

Coming up on the 30th of May is the first edition of the Mini-Criterium Wars (online registration link: https://forms.gle/B83tmu8tp8VoznbM7), and we are all on the edge of our seats waiting to see how the General Classification (GC) leaderboard will play out.

The Criterium race is by itself one unpredictable affair, and one could literally have the underdog take the day. The key is to race smart. (We’ll give pointers in one of our next articles).

So, how would one get on the leader board?

First, here is how we award points:

1st place – 50 points
2nd place – 40 points
3rd place – 30 points
Completion of race – 20 points
Participation – 10 points

Then, we have additional points for exceptional qualities such as punctuality, sportsmanship…each 5 points.

Second, we consider time accumulated when athletes have the same number of points. Assuming all have attempted the same number of races, the one with the least accumulated time (meaning they were faster and thus took less time) is ranked higher.

Interesting thing about the Mini-Crit Wars #1, there will be intermediate sprints, where extra points (5,4,3,2,1) will be awarded to the first five who cross the line, implying that one could very well top the leaderboard by evening!

Now, assuming that the leader of your category failed to show up for the criterium race and you managed to earn (50+5+5 = 60) points, you would automatically be at the top of the GC in your category.

Assuming that the leader did show up, what would be your chances of earning top GC position?

Scenario 1: you win. That’s 50 points, then you got 5 extra points for punctuality, 5 for the first sprint and another 5, those would be 65 points. Irrespective of the position they came in, you would perhaps require two more races to beat them as you’d be near their points accumulation (50 + newly earned points).

Bottom line, you would need to show up for the Mini-Crit Wars to actually stand a chance. Remember, we only look at time accumulation when you have similar points. If you get top points, you are already untouchable.

For the categories that have no GC yet, the Mini-Crit Wars would be an amazing opportunity to fill out the leaderboard, and of course you would need to race in order to be in it.

In September, those athletes with the highest points in the GC are crowned Champions of the Year and are required to defend their Titles during the following competitive season (January – September).

Question: are you willing to give yourself a fighting chance?
