PROPOSAL TO INTRODUCE CYCLING CLUBS IN SCHOOLS DURING SECOND TERM FOR FUN, FITNESS AND TO DEVELOP CYCLING AS A SPORT

I would like to propose the introduction of Cycling Clubs in schools during the second term (from May 2021) for fun, fitness and to develop cycling as a sport. The Club would be under the administration of the school.

The Cycling Academy at the Two Rivers Mall Sports District has both ample grounds and
bicycles to safely engage in cycling as a school-club activity. Furthermore, a cycling program and curriculum have been developed for organisation of the cycling clubs as well as monitor one’s progress. It is worth noting that the cycling curriculum adheres to the national goals of education and the general objectives of Physical Education.

School cycling clubs would:

  1. give students another option when selecting extra-curricular activities,
  2. enable students to gain additional skills not taught in school,
  3. offer cycling to members in a way that is fun, engaging and educative,
  4. encourage increased interaction with other cycling clubs especially during competitions,
  5. give one an opportunity to take part in social rides with peers,
  6. lead to increased love of the sport especially through trips, social interactions and sense
    of belonging,
  7. enable the scouting of potential talent.

During the school season, club members will be able to visit the Cycling Academy for an hour
(or pre-set time) while during the holidays, the members can attend the half-day sessions.
However, if possible, members are encouraged to bring their own bicycles (and helmets) over
the holiday season.

In case one’s bicycle has or develops mechanical issues, the Academy’s (and Decathlon’s) official bike repair partner, Dominion Cycles, offers a service clinic for proper running and functioning of the bicycles.

The main goal of the cycling program is to develop a person who can ride either for fun/fitness or as an athlete. This implies that the program is flexible and applies to most, if not all, cyclists.

Therefore, through the cycling club, one would be exposed to a controlled environment that
fosters basic skills (through the Introductory Stage and the optional Racing Stage) before
graduating either to the Fitness or Competitive Stage.

It would be important to note that the program is learner-centred and thus one’s progression
would depend on their age, interest and capability. Evaluation is measured against a standard where one is expected to demonstrate the skills acquired either in the normal session or in a race. This is a continuous process.

Again, parental consent (after consultation with the School Cycling Club and instructor) would
be required before their child(ren) proceed(s) to the next Stage.

The Club would be required to have at least one contact person who would be the link between
the school, parents and Cycling Academy. In addition, since the Academy intends to preserve
the environment, the use of e-flyers would be encouraged instead of printed paper.

Yours faithfully,
Maina Josemaria,
