Question: when was the last time that you felt happy? Or rather, when was the last time that you were happy?
Was it probably when you landed your dream job? Or perhaps it was when she agreed to go on a date with you (Valentines weekend, maybe😉); or maybe when you got your first salary……….surely there must have been that one time when you felt like you owned the world, and nothing could bring you down?
And then life got busy again and it faded, right? All of a sudden you got back to thinking about leaving the house early in the morning to beat the traffic; or thinking about whether you’d make enough money to consistently put food on the table (especially after the pandemic hit); or whether you had crammed enough content for the history exam; or………
I do not blame you. Such is life. As humans, we tend to have so many things to worry about everyday that we almost never seem to have time for the one person who needs you the most: yourself.
Let me ask you: when was the last time you treated yourself to a well-deserved break where you completely shut out the hustle and bustles of life and just enjoyed the moment? And if you haven’t, why not?
Perhaps you’re waiting for the perfect time? Or maybe you feel like you haven’t made enough money to go on a vacation? Or perhaps you’re afraid of what your colleagues/boss might think if you are anything but completely committed to your task?
Consider a candle’s flame (or fire for that matter): if there is barely enough oxygen/air, the flame will diminish, and with time maybe even go out. But let it breathe, and the flame willl spring to life and even spread warmth to those seeking its heat.
Or what about when you are drinking water? You do pause to take in a breath, right? Keep swallowing and you just might inhale the water and cough violently!
You also need to take a break once in a while, to allow your mind to breathe. And although it sounds fancy and a really great idea to take a trip to the beach, cycling (and physical activity) is a sure bet to that relaxed state.
Echoing last week’s article: cycling enables one to get into a state where they not only leave their buggage behind but also get to fully express themselves as they wouldn’t do elsewhere. It’s the one place where you are allowed to dress in those tight biking tights, sweat, laugh, ride lazily and move around!
Life and our duties are important, I do not differ. But so is your mental health, and most importantly, so are you‼️
Your mind is that flame that requires air to breathe, and when starved, might go out.
So take a break, pick up your bike and ride it this weekend. And if you are afraid of riding on the road or you wanna learn how to ride a bike, then visit us at our Cycling Academy at the Two Rivers Sports District and experience how much we care for your mental well-being😌
(This article is specially dedicated to the National Youth Council’s Youth Mental Wellness Week (22nd – 26th Feb 2021) at the Two Rivers Mall).
